Workshop
Each member in group write down 5 recent events randomly in the “Original sentences”. Then, swapping the subject, verb, adjective/adverb, object among all the sentences and come up with a new list”Modified sentences”.
Choose 3 to 4 emotion and categorize all 25 sentences to each of the emotional type.
- Rage
- Interest
- Disgust
- Awe
At the same time, create the dramatic arc. Then, pick a sentence from each emotional type and arrange the 3 to 4 emotions in linear order to fit into dramatic arc.
Interest>Awe>Disgust>Rage
Try to make sense out of them by modifying the sentences.

The Modified Storyline:
The cat owner is trying to put a milk bottle costume on the cat, but the cat does not like it. The cat tries to disgust the owner by eating the owner’s favourite scary movie. The cat changes into a scary and disgusting cat in the process. The owner is very angry. He tries to catch and hit the cat.
Sketches
Each team member sketches corresponding to the dramatic arc and storyboard.
My Sketches
These are some sketches I made. Since the animation is in more abstract form, I try to use colours to represent the characters’ feelings.
Such as
- Rage > Red
- Interest > Yellow
- Disgust > Green (Referenced: Inside Out)
- Awe > Yellow-Orange
Imagining the feelings what the characters are having when I draw the lines, especially focus on the one with the cat when it becomes a scary cat. Although the lines could easily represent the cat in a disgusting state, the change in lines is not enough.
The following sketches are made by group mates.
Laura’s Sketches

Laura’s sketches are in more solid form. The cat and the storyboard are detailed and similar to cartoon/ comic style.
Wing’s Sketch

Wing’s sketch is similar to Laura’s but with more simplistic lines and more colours.
Ling’s Sketch

Ling’s sketch is between Laura, Wing and mine. Her form is simpler than Laura’s and Wing’s and more solid than mine. It is abstract but still could understand. Therefore, the team decided to expand the story based on her sketch.
The Development from Ling’s Sketch to Final Draft
Finally…
The team divided the work by the system formed during dancing exercise.
I illustrate frames from 111 to 150
Laura find a suitable song, Mussorgsky, for the animation.
